Take Action: Urge Your Legislators to Support the "Promoting Wellness for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 2007"!

On March 29, 2007, Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa introduced a bill called the "Promoting Wellness for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 2007" (S.1050), which would create grant funding opportunities for service providers to meet the unique healthcare needs of people with disabilities. The bill also establishes national accessibility standards for medical diagnostic equipment for people with disabilities. On August 1, 2007, Rep. Nita Lowey of New York introduced an identical bill in the House (H.R. 3294). Both bills have been referred to respective Senate and Congressional subcommittees, and both need your help!

Standards of equipment accessibility for people with disabilities would greatly improve their opportunities to receive the best possible healthcare through diagnostic testing and treatment, including mammograms for women with disabilities. In addition, the grant programs established by this proposed legislation would add much needed funding for community-based programs that continue to serve individuals with disabilities and struggle to cope with rising costs in the U.S. Write your Senators and Congresspeople and ask them to co-sponsor these bills.
